SLIANZ Conference 2012
Fri 20th - Sun 22nd July
Hotel Armitage, 9 Willow Street, Tauranga

Conference Theme: "Interpreter Identity"
Invited Speakers
SLIANZ has received an early Christmas present in the form of distinguished presenters for next year's conference. We are fortunate to have as our keynote speaker Colin Allen, President of the Board of the World Federation of the Deaf. Hailing from Australia, Colin will draw on his experiences as a Deaf person and as an interpreter to guide us during our "Identity"-themed conference. Colin's perspective as both a provider and a consumer of interpreting services will undoubtedly be valuable to us in thinking about our own identity as interpreters, as well as the impact of our interpreting and ethical decisions on the people for whom we work.
We also have another fantastic VIP presenter, also from Australia: Karen Bontempo, whose research into interpreters' personal attributes will lend a scientific slant on our consideration of the "Interpreter Identity." Karen is an experienced Auslan/English interpreter and interpreter trainer, and we will be able to benefit from her personal working experiences as well as the knowledge she has gained from her study and research into psychology and linguistics.
Call for Papers
View our Call for Papers. Deadline for submissions is 1st April 2012.
Registration
Details of registration will be available later in 2012.
Transport
Because our conference is outside the main centres this year, please remember to book your travel early to avoid disappointment. Flights into and out of Tauranga are limited, and those who are taking advantage of the great group transport option will need to coordinate their Auckland flights to fit in with our ground transfer.
SLIANZ has organised a chartered coach (Auckland-Tauranga return) for conference delegates. The cost for passengers will be $30.00 per person return. The coach will leave Auckland airport at 2 p.m. on Friday 20th July and will return to Auckland at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday 22nd July.
Please contact the conference committee if you would like to take advantage of this arrangement.
Social event
We'll also be having a unique social event at the 2012 Conference. This will invite YOU to think about your interpreting identity and share your views with your colleagues! More details to follow in the new year, but over the holidays, think about what does it mean to be an interpreter? And - conversely - what does it mean to take the interpreting hat off and NOT be an interpreter?
